Mechanical watches can generally be divided into manual and automatic. Both mechanical power source is within the movement by the mainspring, driven gears to push hands, just that there are differences of the way for the power source.

Manual winding mechanical watch is able to rely on manpower turning the crown, releasing the energy of the winding system to make the watch go functioning. But winding the watch too tight may cause damage to the barrel.

The self-winding automatic mechanical watch no only retaining the manual winding function, the watch can also rely on the movement pendulum too. When user wearing the watch, the oscillating weight rotates to achieve the winding purpose. Because the winding process will continue as long as user wearing it, there is a function to prevent automatic mechanical watch to break the spring.
